The areas of application in psychology

We can encounter the work of psychologists in many places, as besides private counseling, there is a huge need for them in various areas of life. Let's see how society benefits from this widely recognized field of science.

Psychologists help us in institutions, such as at our workplaces. According to the Labor Code, it is the employer's responsibility to create a safe and healthy environment for employees, including managing stress-related risks. Work and organizational psychologists contribute to this process among others. Psychologist colleagues are also available in kindergartens and schools to help children overcome their difficulties and provide proper guidance for parents regarding their child's condition, and at universities young adults can already try out the effects of psychology on their own. The work of psychologists is essential for adoption processes as well, and when problematic situations arise within families.

Forensic psychologists and criminal psychologists consider the expert opinions and profiling results as important tools during various criminal investigations and court trials, and in correctional institutions inmates also receive psychological care. In prisons, psychologists not only address current mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, personality disorders – but also strive to rehabilitate offenders so they can become full members of society after their release. In the selection and training of military and law enforcement personnel, as well as protecting their mental health during their work, psychology plays a prominent role.

In hospitals, clinical psychologists assist in developing mental health. Psychologists do not only deal with mental patients, but also help in processing and accepting any other illnesses, and psychological assistance is available for relatives in mental health centers and rehabilitation centers outside of hospitals. It is essential to turn to psychological help in cases of addictions, such as alcoholism, drug use, behavioral addictions, digital addictions – in institutions specialized for these, psychologist colleagues await the courageous who wish to change. Health psychologists can assist in establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as healthy eating and disease prevention. Sports psychologists work with athletes on their mental well-being, like overcoming performance anxiety and finding motivation. Sports clubs, sports schools, coaches, athletes, and parents gladly welcome the help of psychologists for themselves or their athletes or children.

In various practical situations, there is also a need for psychologists, such as after unsuccessful driving license attempts, the future license holders must undergo psychological suitability tests for further trials, and in case of accidents, when health issues persist. Psychologists also work in disaster management, providing immediate intervention during crisis situations and helping to process and manage trauma – these situations can include a mass accident, natural disaster, refugee aid, war.

To end on a more cheerful note, of course psychology can also broaden our horizons in numerous “comfort” situations, such as the field of environmental psychology. Environmental psychologists study the interactions between people and their environment. Their research aims to understand how the physical environment influences human behavior, emotions, and well-being, and how people impact their environment. Environmental psychology can be applied in a colorful palette, including urban planning, architectural design, work environment creation, and environmental protection initiatives. They deal with features that aid people in their living environments to reduce stress and improve their quality of life, such as natural light, noise levels, and the location of green areas. They also study what motivates people towards eco-friendly behavior, and based on these results, they develop strategies that encourage sustainable behavior. Environmental psychologists are involved in transportation system planning and examine how these affect people's transportation habits, sense of safety, and stress levels. They also study how community spaces like parks, playgrounds, and public places can be designed to promote social interactions, community feeling, and mental well-being.

As can be seen, psychology has become an integral part of our lives, work, and everyday activities in recent times, its effectiveness and importance are unquestionable. However, the above list is clearly incomplete, as it does not mention private counseling as an applied field. Private practices, individually working psychologists, and specialist psychologists can specialize in helping those who approach them with problems arising in everyday life. Types of counseling conducted in such settings can include adult psychological counseling, child or adolescent consultation, parent consultation, or couple therapy.
