Should I choose a personal or online format?

Both online and in-person consultations have their own unique aspects, and personal preference can vary from one person to another regarding which option they prefer.
Covid undeniably brought changes to the way the whole world operates, and psychology is no exception. The virus opened up the opportunity towards therapeutic processes in the online space, or more precisely, that kind of openness from both clients and professionals, without which a part of psychotherapy could never have moved online. This is a change that was almost unimaginable before, even though the technical conditions for counseling in the digital space had been in place for a long time.
By the end of 2020, the world of video-call therapies had already become a frequently researched area. According to the results of a 2021 study conducted at a Texas university (Live psychotherapy by video versus in-person: A meta-analysis of efficacy and its relationship to types and targets of treatment. Fernandez et al, 2021.), from a clinical standpoint, the therapy is just as effective when conducted via videoconferencing as it is in person, especially with cognitive behavioral therapy for treating affective disorders (anxiety, depression, PTSD). Video psychotherapy is not only a convenient choice, but based on the meta-analysis, it also proves to be an effective method.
This is absolutely great news for anyone who finds it impractical to attend sessions in person due to logistical, health, or other private reasons. This could be a long-term illness that prevents free movement, or we might face limitations when there is no suitable professional or capacity locally (rural areas). For some clients, consulting in the online space can also be better for convenience because they are short on time, or are simply used to the online world anyway due to their job (e.g., the IT world).
However, it is essential to highlight those human factors that can play an important role in the overall experience that a counseling process can offer in person. In these cases, non-verbal communication can be monitored much more closely, meaning body language and facial expressions, giving us a clearer picture of each other's communication. The consulting room – as a neutral space where the client is alone and no one else can hear them, can truly help with opening up, reflection, and involvement. Our homes are much less able to offer this experience, since on one hand, it can cause anxiety if someone else is nearby during therapy, and on the other hand, it is harder to tune into the session. Getting to the office can play a key role in helping the client think through their current feelings and thoughts, and the way home also provides a great opportunity to calm down and process what was said. The personal space can also be ideal for building a more intimate connection, which is specifically needed for certain therapeutic interventions, e.g., relaxation techniques, autogenic training. When we are there in person, nothing can disrupt the rhythm of the session, as the connection won't drop, there will be no technical background issues, and this can bring extra peace of mind.
All in all, both the online space and in-person sessions have their own list of pros and cons. Often, it doesn't even depend on us which version we need to choose. What is certain, however, is that the number of situations where we can connect with each other in person is decreasing. But if there are no physical barriers, do try out the magic of personal connection, and make the most of the positive benefits of face-to-face communication.
