As a private individual

Whether as a professional or as a private individual, I am interested in (and characterized by) complexity, depth, and originality. I don't like a life built on simple clichés, so I always seek the unique, the special, and the authentic. I love being inspired and provoked to think by others, and of course, I also enjoy the reverse: when I can inspire and provoke thought in people.

It is perhaps no coincidence that writing, reading, creation, and performance, as well as the sciences and the arts, have always played a huge role in my life.

Even during my school years, I considered these not as passively endured, but as freely chosen and highly enjoyable activities, or hobbies, if you will. Accordingly, professional and cultural education is for me a daily activity and completely natural.

Patterman Péter

I regularly read both literature and professional works in Hungarian and English, frequently visit the cinema and theater, and watch deeply engaging performances and films. Besides, I genuinely enjoy appearing in the press and media, as I am often asked to contribute as an expert (or even as an author) to various articles, reports, and presentations. However, I never see these as work, but rather as a kind of creative process, so I almost always do them pro bono.

After all this, I think it is no surprise that my professional and private selves form an inseparable unity in my personality.

As a therapist

"I am human, and nothing human is alien to me."

As a counselor, this ancient Roman poet Publius Terentius’s thought has resonated most deeply with me, and I always strive to convey its message to my clients. It points to the idea that it is unwise to label the various shades of our personality as simply good or bad, to hide them from others, or to deny them even to ourselves. Our needs, thoughts, feelings, and actions cannot be deemed inherently right or wrong, rational or illogical, unnecessary or of utmost importance in isolation.

Each has its own legitimacy, reason, purpose, as well as benefits and risks.

The key is simply to recognize, understand, accept, and consciously manage those times when certain aspects come to the forefront and become problematic. This is both the price and the gift of self-awareness. Another message of the quote is that the counselor is not flawless either. They are human—flesh and blood, with their own wounds, struggles, weaknesses, and blind spots.

Therefore, despite greater experience and knowledge about the workings of the human mind, the counselor and client remain equal partners committed to mutual collaboration and shared growth.

Because of all this, I believe a good professional’s primary role is to help their client mobilize their unique strengths, solve difficulties independently, and embrace their most authentic and complete self. I am here to help you help yourself.
