Psychologist prices: how much does a consultation cost, and what factors affect the price? How much is worth spending on therapy? Let's find out now.

The topic of mental health is increasingly taking center stage – and for good reason. Psychologist prices make many people wonder: is it really worth paying for a "chat"? What determines the prices, and how can we find the ideal professional for us? In my article, I look not only at the costs but also at the underlying value.

  • Psychological counseling is not an expense, but an investment in mental health.

  • Prices range between 15,000–30,000 HUF, with couples therapy between 30,000–50,000 HUF.

  • Free options are often less engaging, making them frequently ineffective.

How much is our mental health worth?

  • The average fee for individual psychological counseling in Hungary today ranges between 15,000 HUF and 30,000 HUF.

  • The average fee for a couples therapy session is between 30,000 HUF and 50,000 HUF.

  • The average fee for online psychological counseling starts from 12,000 HUF.

Is this expensive or not? It’s a matter of perspective. If we break our leg, we go to the doctor without a second thought. Yet, if we have been feeling tense, listless, or anxious for months, we often put off asking for help. But our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

– and not just for us, but for those around us too. A balanced person can connect better with others, work more efficiently, and put less strain on the family system.

So, going to a psychologist is not just "for ourselves": our children, our relationship, our colleagues, and even our friends profit when we are in harmony with ourselves.

That’s why it’s worth reframing the cost of psychological support: not as an expense, but looking at it as an investment – indeed, one with one of the best returns.

"Free" therapy is not a good solution

Many people look for free options – for understandable reasons. However, experience shows that "freeness" often does not favor either the depth of the process or the commitment.

When there are no real stakes to the sessions – either financially or emotionally – it is much easier to skip a session, the work can become more superficial, and that kind of responsible, internal motivation needed for real change is less likely to develop.

The dynamics are also different from the psychologist's side if there is no clear, committed professional framework and fee. Free or "favor-based" therapies are often less structured, and are less able to provide that supportive, professionally protected environment in which meaningful work happens. This is especially important when dealing with deeper issues, traumas, or processing long-standing life roadblocks.

Another point that is definitely worth adding to the topic is the long waiting time as a consideration. Using free services – e.g., seeking help from foundations or associations – can be a very complicated and time-consuming process. Usually, you will face list after list of waiting lists if you want to get in somewhere.

Regardless, it is important to emphasize that if you have no other options, you should definitely take advantage of some kind of free service! You can get more precise information at the locally competent care providers.

What factors influence psychologist prices?

Psychologist prices depend on many factors, with the following being the most crucial:

Type and duration of therapy:

Individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, group sessions – all require different amounts of time and expertise. Clearly, this aspect sees the biggest variation in different fees, and let me explain why.

Some psychologists hold 45, others 50 or 60-minute individual sessions – this can influence the pricing.

Couples or family therapy sessions are usually longer and more expensive, as the professional works with multiple people at the same time for a longer duration, but the sessions are less frequent than with individual psychotherapy, usually meeting every two weeks. In addition, the methodology preferably requires the joint presence of two professionals, in which cases the fee is split between the two specialists – which is also why you might see higher prices.

Group sessions, however, always cost less than individual counseling, as more people are present during the same unit of time. The trade-off is still there: though it requires less financial investment from the client, the amount of attention the professional can provide to each participant is also less.

This is not always a problem or a disadvantage. Group sessions have plenty of benefits, such as the extra value from group dynamics that can never appear in an individual therapy process where only that client is present. Furthermore, for certain mental issues, traumas, or roadblocks, the person affected can recover exceptionally well in a therapy designed specifically in a group format, so it's not just psychologist prices that influence whether the cheaper version is a good choice or not.

Qualification and experience:

The hourly rate of clinical or specialized psychologists and psychotherapists is typically higher than that of a professional starting out in their career. Psychologists trained in various method-specific programs may also calculate the cost of their training into their fees.

Similarly, the price of a highly sought-after psychologist with many years of practice can also be higher. This is also a complex issue and can be very deceptive. You can't achieve "experienced professional" status without the psychologist starting to work, but if they signal this to their future clientele with significantly lower prices, they might not win their trust, and in turn, might not actually get clients.

So it is an absolutely possible scenario that starting professionals position their fees at the same level as their "black-belt" colleagues.

In addition, if the psychologist works with a specific methodology (e.g., EMDR, somatic therapy, sex therapy) or one that requires extra tools (e.g., art therapy, CBT), this can also be reflected in the price.

Location:

In Budapest and major cities, prices are generally higher, while in smaller countryside towns, the service is typically cheaper – this does not necessarily mean a difference in quality.

An important related aspect is that the costs for psychologists in Budapest or big cities can also be much higher. There are far more postgraduate training opportunities in Budapest than anywhere else in the country, and if colleagues make use of these – sparing neither their time nor money – it will certainly show in their prices.

On the other hand, property prices are higher in Budapest, which consequently makes office rentals more expensive too.

However, it is also highly possible that in certain rural areas you might encounter higher psychologist prices precisely because there are so few professionals that their services become more valuable. Especially in the case of increased demand.

Is online therapy cheaper?

With the spread of online psychological support, many naturally ask: is an online psychologist cheaper? The answer: not necessarily. The professional devotes the same amount of time and expertise to the session as they would in person. However, the online format can still bring financial benefits to the client:

  • No travel costs or wasted time: No parking, no transport pass, or petrol needed – this can mean significant savings, especially for weekly therapy.

And of course, we realize as adults that the saying "time is money" is a very valid and smart legacy from our parents... 🤪

  • Flexibility: Many can fit an online session into their day even if they wouldn't otherwise have time to travel to an office.

  • More options to choose from: If you don't limit yourself to one specific city, a wider base of professionals is available – in which case you can even filter by price – although I recommend that, if possible, this should not be your primary consideration.

Overall, then, online therapy is not necessarily cheaper in price, but it can be more cost-effective, especially when you consider the incidental expenses and time investment.

Psychologist prices at Tabuk Villája

At the Tabuk Villája Psychological Center, we have tried to design our prices to reflect quality client care while remaining accessible.

  • Individual psychological counseling – child, adolescent, adult – (50 minutes): 17,000 – 22,000 HUF

  • Sex therapy (50 minutes): 30,000 HUF

  • Couples therapy (80 minutes): 35,000 – 40,000 HUF

  • Online session (same duration): at the same price, available upon request.

It is difficult to state an average price range due to the factors discussed above, but for individual sessions, an average price between 15,000 and 30,000 HUF reflects reality. Couples and family therapy prices range between 30,000 and 50,000 HUF.

You can always find both cheaper and more expensive psychologist prices on the market, but we believe that the invested value pays off. Our professionals work aligned with supervision, intervision, and regular professional workshops, continuously training themselves at various professional courses, universities, and method-specific training centers, and they take every single case seriously.

How to find the ideal professional!

Choosing a psychologist is a personal and sensitive decision – so the points below can help you make a good choice:

  • Pay attention to qualifications: Your psychologist should be a qualified (certified) psychologist. If you are seeking help for a specific topic, it doesn't hurt if they have completed specialized training in that area – e.g., sexual psychology, sports psychology. Knowledge of various methodologies also increases competence.

  • The most important thing is a good connection: The feeling of trust and safety is extremely important; without it, real work cannot begin between you and your psychologist – even if they are a highly trained professional.

  • Trust your first instinct: An introductory text says a lot about how they view the world, their working style, what kind of person they might be in reality, and whether there are points where you can imagine connecting with them.

  • Make the most of the first session: During the first session, feel free to ask questions and see how the psychologist responds to them. If you feel you can't work with them, don't be afraid to keep looking.

  • Try the online option too: If you don't have the opportunity to go in person, the online format is now a fully-fledged alternative.

Maybe the psychologist won't solve your life for you, but they will help you to solve it yourself. And this kind of support is often worth more than anything else we spend money on.

Because when we are sorted on the inside, it affects every other area too: our relationships, our work, our health.

So the question is not whether it is worth seeing a psychologist, but when you will give yourself this opportunity.

If you feel the time is right, we’ll be here to help.

Frequently asked questions

What guarantees that I will receive professional help for the money paid?

The professional’s qualifications (degree, specialized exam) and mandatory professional supervision guarantee that the process takes place along scientifically based methodologies, rather than subjective opinions.

Why does an online consultation cost the same as an in-person meeting?

The fee is not about the room rental, but about the professional's university-acquired knowledge, their full attention focused on you, and the professional preparation happening in the background.

Why doesn't the psychologist tell me right at the start exactly how many sessions I will need?

Since every soul and life situation is unique, the length of the process becomes clear during the work, but after the first few sessions, the professional can already suggest an estimated direction and framework for you.
