Psychologist prices: how much does a consultation cost, and what factors affect the price? How much is worth spending on therapy? Let's find out now.
Questions of mental health are increasingly coming into focus – and not without reason. The cost of psychologists gives many people pause: is it worth paying for a "conversation"? What influences the pricing, and how can we find the ideal specialist for us? In my article, I examine not only the costs but also the underlying value.
Seeing a psychologist is not an expense but an investment in mental health.
Prices range from 15,000 to 30,000 Ft, with couples therapy being 30–50,000 Ft.
Free options are often less engaging, and therefore, not usually effective.
How much is our mental health worth?
The average fee for individual psychological counseling in Hungary today is between 15,000 Ft and 30,000 Ft.
The average fee for a couples therapy session ranges from 30,000 Ft to 50,000 Ft.
The average cost of online psychological counseling starts at 12,000 Ft.
Is this expensive or not? It's a matter of perspective. If we break a leg, we turn to a doctor without hesitation. But if we have been tense, restless, or anxious for months, we often delay seeking help. Yet our mental health is just as important as our physical health.
– and not just for us but also for our environment. A balanced person can connect better with others, function more effectively at work, and place less burden on the family system.
Visiting a psychologist is therefore not just "for ourselves": our children, our relationships, our colleagues, and even our friends benefit if we are at peace with ourselves.
This is why it's worth reframing the costs of psychological support: not as an expense but as an investment – indeed one of the best-yielding investments.
The “free” therapy is not a good solution
Many seek free options – understandably so. However, experience shows that "free" often does not favor the depth of the process or commitment.
If the sessions lack real stakes – financial or emotional – it's much easier for them to be cancelled, the work can be superficial, and the type of responsible internal motivation needed for real change occurs less frequently.
From the psychologist's perspective, the dynamics are also different without clear, agreed professional frameworks and payment. Free or "favorable" therapies are often less structured, and less capable of providing the supportive, professionally safe environment where meaningful work occurs. This is especially important when dealing with deeper issues, traumas, or prolonged life management blockages.
Something else definitely worth adding to this topic is the long waiting periods as a consideration. Using free services, such as from foundations or associations, can be a very cumbersome and lengthy process. Generally, one will encounter waiting lists when trying to get into a place.
Nevertheless, it's important to emphasize that if no other option is available, be sure to utilize some form of free service! At the appropriate regional centers, everyone can receive precise information.
What factors influence the cost of a psychologist?
Psychologist fees depend on many factors, with the following being most significant:
Type and duration of therapy:
Individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, group sessions – each requires different time and expertise. This consideration clearly explains the greatest variance in the different fees, so I’m elaborating on why.
Some psychologists offer 45, others 50 or 60 minutes for individual sessions – this can affect the pricing.
Couples or family therapy sessions are generally longer and more expensive, as multiple people are involved at once for a longer duration, although sessions are less frequent than in individual psychotherapy, since the professional usually meets the couple or family biweekly. Moreover, the methodology tends to require the presence of two professionals together, in which case the fee is split between the two professionals – hence we see higher prices.
Group sessions are always less expensive than individual counseling, as more people are present for the same unit of time. The principle remains, although it entails less financial investment from the client's side, there is also less attention the professional can provide for each participant.
This does not always pose a problem or disadvantage. Group sessions have many advantages, for example, the additional values derived from group dynamics can never appear in individual therapeutic processes where the client is alone. Furthermore, certain mental problems, traumas, or blockages can especially recover well in a group format, so it’s not just the psychologist's fees influencing whether the cheaper version is a good decision or not.
Qualification and experience:
The hourly rate for clinical or trained psychologists and psychotherapists is typically higher than that of a newly graduated professional. Psychologists trained in various method-specific training can also factor in their qualifications in their fees.
Similarly, the fee for a long-practicing, sought-after psychologist can also be higher. This is also a complex subject, and can be deceiving. The "experienced professional" status cannot be achieved without beginning to work for a psychologist, but if this is signaled with significantly lower prices to prospective clients, they may not receive trust from them to actually have clients.
Thus, it’s absolutely possible for beginner professionals to set their fees to the level of their "black belt" colleagues.
Furthermore, if a psychologist works with a specific methodology (e.g., EMDR, somatic therapy, sex therapy) or a method requiring additional tool usage (e.g., art therapy, CBT), this is reflected in the price.
Location:
Prices are usually higher in Budapest and large cities, while services tend to be cheaper in smaller rural municipalities – this does not necessarily mean a difference in quality.
A related important consideration is that costs for psychologists in Budapest or large cities can be much higher. There are far more post-graduate training opportunities in Budapest than anywhere else in the country. If colleagues utilize these opportunities with their own time and money, it will surely be reflected in their pricing.
Additionally, real estate prices are higher in Budapest, so office rental costs can also be more expensive.
It is also conceivable that in certain rural areas, you might find higher psychologist fees due to the scarcity of professionals, hence services become more valued - particularly with increased demand.

Is online therapy cheaper?
With the spread of online psychological support, many naturally ask: is the online psychologist cheaper? The answer: not necessarily. The professional spends the same amount of time and expertise on the session as during personal meetings. Nonetheless, the online format can still mean financial benefits for the client:
There are no travel costs or time loss: No parking, no pass or petrol – this can be a significant saving, especially for weekly therapy.
And of course, as adults, we realize that the saying "time is money" is very valid and a wise legacy from our parents... 🤪
Flexibility: Many can fit an online session into their day, even if they wouldn’t have time to go to an office.
More options to choose from: If we do not insist on a specific city, a wider range of professionals is available – in this case, we can even select by price – I advise, if possible, not to make this the primary consideration, if possible.
Overall, online therapy might not be cheaper in price, but can be cost-effective, especially if we consider accompanying expenses and time investment.
Psychologist fees at Tabuk Villája
At the Tabuk Villája Psychological Center, we have tried to structure our fees to reflect quality client handling while remaining accessible.
Individual psychological counseling – child, adolescent, adult – (50 minutes): 17,000 – 22,000 Ft
Sex therapy (50 minutes): 30,000 Ft
Couples therapy (80 minutes): 35,000 – 40,000 Ft
Online session (same duration): at the same price, selectable on demand.
It's hard to state the average price range due to the aforementioned considerations, but for individual sessions, the average price of 15,000-30,000 Ft reflects reality. For couple and family therapy, prices range between 30-50 thousand Ft.
There are both cheaper and more expensive psychologist fees in the market, but we believe that the invested value pays off. Our professionals work with supervision, intervision, and regular professional workshops, engage in various professional training, universities, method-specific training places, continuing their education, and take every single case seriously.
How to find the ideal professional!
Choosing a psychologist is a personal and sensitive decision – so the following considerations can help you make a good choice:
Pay attention to qualifications: Your psychologist should be a graduate (certified) psychologist. If you need help in a specific subject, it doesn't hurt if they've taken specialist training in that area – e.g., sexual psychology, sport psychology. Familiarity with various methodologies also increases competence.
The most important is a good rapport: The sense of trust and security is extremely important; without it, real work cannot start between you and your psychologist – even if you have a highly qualified professional.
Trust your first impression: A biographical text reveals much about how they think about the world, their working style, their true personality, and if there are points through which you can imagine connecting with them.
Make use of the first session: During the first session, don't hesitate to ask questions and observe how the psychologist reacts to them. If you feel you can't work with them, don't be afraid to keep searching.
Try the online option too: If you don't have the opportunity to go in person, the online form can now be a complete alternative.
A psychologist may not solve your life for you, but they help you so that you can solve it. And this kind of support is often more valuable than anything else we spend money on.
Because when we are internally okay, it also impacts all other areas: our relationships, our work, our health.
Therefore, the question is not whether it's worth turning to a psychologist, but when you will give yourself this opportunity.
If you feel the time is right, we will be here to help you.
